Stress, Burnout & Emotional Exhaustion

Burnout is now being taken seriously by the medical community and in May 2019 the World Health Organisation classified excessive stress and burnout as an “occupational phenomenon”.

The WHO goes on to say:

Burn-out is a syndrome conceptualised as resulting from chronic stress that has not been successfully managed. It is characterised by three dimensions:

  • feelings of energy depletion or exhaustion
  • increased mental distance from one’s job, or feelings of negativism or cynicism related to one’s job
  • reduced professional efficacy.

In other words, you’re not alone. This is happening to many people and it is not confined to the workplace.

Burnout is a state of emotional, mental, and physical exhaustion caused by excessive and prolonged stress. If you are feeling continuously overwhelmed and unable to meet constant demands you are probably on the brink of burnout.

Successful and motivated people are not immune to developing dysfunctional patterns of behaviour to cope with the demands of their roles. Substance abuse and inability to modulate mood are commons signs of stress and imminent burnout.

Over time professional capacities are impacted as are reputations and relationships with colleagues and family members.

We understand that many of our clients can physically remove themselves from the workplace but still need to attend to professional responsibilities. Whilst experiencing a completely comprehensive treatment program you will also have ample time to attend to work and family responsibilities.
